FIRST DAY: EXPERIENCES IN THE COMMUNITIES AND NATURE
IN THE PNRA.

It is located on the Amazonian slope of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes, to the east
from the town of Huicungo, in the department of San Martín. It consists of a
extension of 274,520 hectares. Its main objective is to protect a sample
representative of the cloudy forests of the ceja de selva and high selva, which
includes various areas of endemism.

The Interpretation Center of the Río Abiseo National Park offers visitors the chance to learn about the natural and cultural wealth of this privileged conservation area: the Río Abiseo National Park (PNRA),
declared Natural and Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The Interpretation Center, located in the town of Huicungo, 30 minutes from the
district of Juanjui, is an exhibition space where you will have the opportunity to
>get to know and learn about the architectural constructions of Gran Pajatén and the
biodiversity that exists in the Park.
In this way, through different environments equipped with information panels, photographs, graphics and illustrations, and With the accompaniment of a
specialized guide, a tour of an average duration of 1 hour and a half begins.
During the visit, you will contemplate about 20 different themes, such as
important samples of endemic flora and fauna, the conservation of
ecosystems, forests, waters, and archeological sites within the
PNRA, among others.
This place, therefore, will provide you with detailed information such as the Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey (Oreonax flavicauda), the most important endemic primate species in Peru, which does not inhabit anywhere else in the world, and which was one of the reasons why it was created precisely the protected area
of the Río Abiseo National Park.
You will also be able to meet a large number of other rare and endemic species that
live in the park, such as the spectacled bear, the giant armadillo, the Andean deer
of the north, the jaguar, primates and hundreds of species of birds, not to mention more than 5,000 registered plant species.
The Interpretation Center is ideal for visiting with the family, since it also
contains elements of a playful nature to liven up the visit of children and young people,
presenting the contents in a more motivating way, thus facilitating the
learning process.
The Río Abiseo National Park Interpretation Center was inaugurated on February 14, 2008, with the aim of promoting research, environmental education and sustainable tourism, in order to contribute to raising awareness and
conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the Park.

El distrito de Huicungo acondiciona un local para difundir la riqueza del patrimonio
cultural y natural que encierra el Gran Pajatén, una de las maravillas culturales del
Perú, puesta en valor para su uso turístico y con fines de investigación.
El Gran Pajatén fue descubierto por el Juanjuino «Eduardo Peña Meza», cuando
buscaba una vía de salida entre la selva y la costa, Llegó al complejo del Gran
Pajatén, desde ese hallazgo comunicó a diferentes autoridades y así se supo en
Juanjui, Trujillo, Lima, la existencia de esas ciudadela llamada Pajatèn, en honor a
este descubrimiento, el 5 de diciembre de 1932, Eduardo Peña Meza es
incorporado como socio correspondiente de la Sociedad Geográfica de Lima.
En 1985, un equipo dirigido por el departamento de antropología de la Universidad
de Colorado comenzó un importante proyecto de investigación en el Gran Pajatén
y sus alrededores en el Parque Nacional Río Abiseo. La expedición tuvo mucha
publicidad que condujo a nuevos debates de la apertura del sitio al turismo. Una
expedición televisiva peruana en 1990, despejó nuevamente la vegetación
protectora del sitio y dañó más las ruinas. Actualmente, existen planes para la
construcción de varias carreteras y la infraestructura turística en la región, pero
tampoco se han aplicado debido a la fragilidad de las ruinas, y el alto costo de la
conservación del sitio y reducir al mínimo los impactos turísticos en su integridad
arqueológica y el contexto ambiental.

QUINTO DIA: LA CUEVA DE LOS FRANCECES EN EL PARQUE NACIONAL DEL RÌO ABISEO

CUEVA DE LOS FRANCESES


Es una cueva de 2. 5 metros hasta 10 m de altura, 2 mide ancho y 100 metros de
profundidad. Al interior de la cueva se observa la presencia de elementos
minerales como el cuarzo y la formación de estalactitas y estalagmitas, como
también la acumulación de líquidos filtrados en forma de una poza mediana con
una presencia cristalina llamado líquido purificado. Conformado también por
ambientes totalmente oscuros, con pisos de características rocosas y un clima frío
por la ausencia de los rayos del sol. Este es el lugar de refugio y hospedero de
especies de aves como los Guácharos y de mamíferos como los Murciélagos. El
nombre de la mencionada cueva se debe a la historia de dos ciudadanos franceses
que ingresaron hasta el fondo de la cueva creyendo que al interior había oro, su
afán desmedido de riqueza llevó a la muerte a uno de ellos, de allí el nombre de
“Cueva de los Franceses”. Está a 2.1 kilometro, aproximado 1 hora pie desde la
orilla del rio Abiseo, cruzando al otro lado del puesto de control churo.
